Spring Fashion

With the unseasonably warm temperatures we’ve felt in Omaha lately, looking forward to spring fashion at the beginning of January doesn’t seem so unrealistic.  We at BUNGALOW/8 have just been DYING over photos of all the Spring collections and while we’re still swaddling ourselves in wool, velvet, and fur, we can’t help but drool over what came down the runway this season.

As a lover of ultra-feminine looks, I am beyond delighted to see the figure-flattering peplum cut coming back in vogue. I can’t wait to pair the shape with a perfectly tailored pencil skirt and a pair of statement sunglasses, the best part of warm-weather dressing.

Chanel’s ready-to-wear collection for spring has been a favorite of ours here in the salon. Nothing like some stand-out futuristic looking Chelsea boots paired with impeccable suiting in luxurious pastels and stark whites and creams. In the salon, we’ve all been playing with color and pattern. Some of us have been mixing stripes and patterns, a trend I feel we’ll see for seasons to come. Others have been experimenting with monochromatic looks, something that’s easy to pull off and looks very chic on a budget.

In terms of hair, or, the best part of fashion, what we’re seeing on the runway is contributing to what we’re seeing on the streets more than it ever has. Ombre color and more lived-in, sexy texture are proving to have more staying power than I ever thought they would.  In many spring collections, deep side-parts are all the rage, a great way to adjust your look without losing all the length you’ve worked so hard for.  At Sonia Rykiel, deep side-parts were adorned with lovely minimal black barrettes, a great way to add interest and keep misbehaving hairs in place.

As in past seasons, we continue to see braids, waves, and towering top knots galore. While I am absolutely delighted by the continuing trend of legitimately STYLING one’s hair, it is important to continue to keep it in the best of shape by implementing a hair maintenance routine. We at BUNGALOW/8 Hairdressing are proud to announce our new relationship with Kerastase, a brilliant European treatment line focused on maintaining and restoring the fabric of the hair, making it possible to style and restyle day-in and day-out.  Healthy hair is always in style, and Kerastase’s rich masques, custom-blended, in-salon Fusio-dose treatments, and luxurious home hair care products are something we are so proud to be able to offer our clients from this day forward.

With frills, finery, and long-lush-luminous locks,

Classic Style is Eternal

Can you believe that it is already Thanksgiving?!  This year has just flown by and our winter holidays are right around the corner.  The holidays bring us dinners, cocktail events, corporate holiday parties, and get-togethers not to mention all of the social and charitable events to raise money and awareness for our local (and global) causes.

With so much to do and so little time, we find that the day-to-evening transition gets shorter and shorter (if it even exists at all).  Focusing on a simple, classic style is the key to an effortless chic appearance in the boardroom and in the ball room.  Our friends at www.stylelist.com helped us by doing all of the leg work.  They went through the 1950’s and found us some of the best hair that is still translateable today.

If you don’t want to commit to a 24/7 style straight out of the American Golden Age, then you can use some of the styles as inspiration to help get you ready for all of your social obligations and frivolities.  Try a primly waved bob (or faux-bob for our long haired friends), a Rockabilly Quif (which is a fun UK term for a “pompadour”), or a sleek and simple ponytail.  You will be the talk of your friends with an endless source of inspiration for great style through the coming holiday season.

Check out the story and pick your favorite.  If you find trouble achieving a style or just want to have fun, join BUNGALOW/8 Hairdressing for our 3rd annual “Blowdry Bootcamp” where our stylists will take some time to teach you how to give yourself the ultimate round brush blowdry, a never-will-fall top knot, beautiful mermaid waves, or a pin-straight style for a modern look.  Join us on the up-coming Fridays for wine, appetizers, and style instruction.

Friday, November 18  |  5pm-7pm

Become a Professional!

Getting a salon-worthy blowout every day is a dream for most women when it comes to kids, career, and social obligations, but it doesn’t have to just be a dream.  First and foremost, you need to have the perfect haircut for your face-shape.  Finding a technically precise stylist who is an expert in haircutting to set the foundation is one of the most important aspects of looking and feeling beautiful every day.  Along with finding the right stylist for a perfect haircut, the second biggest mistake people make is cutting their own fringe.  At BUNGALOW/8, all bang trims are complimentary which allows the stylist to keep your bang piece melted into your hairstyle.

Next, keeping your hair in tip-top shape is also something that is of the utmost importance.  Staying away from over processing, too much color, and too much heat will preserve the integrity of your hair.  It is easy to trash your hair with the wrong products and too much styling, so spend your beauty budget on good products and chill on the heat tools.

Next, when you are in the salon with your favorite stylist, take the time to ask questions and request that your stylist actually teach you to style your hair at home.  There are a myriad of tips and tricks the professionals use in tandem with professional styling products and boar-bristle brushes to replicate the salon style in your own bathroom.  These small nuances will make or break your home-based blowdry.

Want to become a pro at styling your hair sans salon?  Join BUNGALOW/8 and our team of extraordinary stylists for our third annual Blowdry Bootcamp and spend an hour with us for instruction on the basics of the blowdry, special event styling, and hair tips and tricks.  Also, get a recommendation from your stylist about the perfect products to make achieving a salon-worthy blowdry at home easier!

Transition into Fall/Winter 2011

When seasons change, our way of dressing generally shifts as well (especially in the snowy Midwest).  When employing a new wardrobe, it becomes important to continue that transition into your hair color and make-up palette as well.

In terms of hair, in the salon I generally shift most of my clients to darker and warmer tones each winter; this includes taking many of my blondes to a warmer and richer color spectrum.  When taking the change of hair color into consideration, we must also look at changing the way we care for our thirsty locks.  Bumble and bumble’s Quenching line provides great moisture and color protection as well as therapy for the terribly thirsty.  Additionally, Bumble’s Creme de Coco line and Gentle Shampoo paired with Super Rich Conditioner are perfect choices to beat the dry, staticy winter air.  Placing a bottle of these hair-hydrators in my shower has been an annual winter hair ritual especially considering my snow-white tresses.

As your hair color and clothing changes, many of us often forget to transition our make-up as well.  Here are some ideas to help you make the winter transition easy:

Lips:  Lip colors become darker and more matte which compliments our skin as it lightens through the fall and winter months.

Eyes:  Eye combinations tend to become more smoky and dramatic with the shift to rich browns, grays, charcoal, and jewel tones.  Don’t forget your brows!!  Brow shaping becomes more and more important as the winter months trudge on.  Brow powders in tones that compliment the change in hair color fill sparse spots and complete a fuller, bolder shape.

Skin/Complexion:  Moisturizers become thicker as our skin becomes dryer and needs more protection from the cold, dry wind.  Foundations and powders become lighter and more translucent as our pigment loses that summer sun-kiss.  Tuck your bronzers into the back of your cabinet and pull out your blushes to play up cheeks this season.  Make sure to invest in great lip balm and eye creme to ensure your face is protected from Old Man Winter.

Check out this great article about fall/winter make-up from Harper’s Bazaar Magazine that also provides great fall style for hair and make-up.  http://www.harpersbazaar.com/beauty/makeup-articles/fall-2011-beauty-trends-highlights#fbIndex1

Rose Gold… Hair

The expert stylists at BUNGALOW/8 Hairdressing have fallen in love with this season’s hottest trend; ROSE GOLD. From it’s inception, the stylists have embraced the rosey hue whether it is found in a rose gold watch, shimmery rose gold nails, a metallic rose gold shirt or- you guessed it- awesome rose gold hair.

Creating this luxe result with classic hairdressing techniques is a process for specialized colorists.  The result is effortless and beautiful.  Champagne, blush, and pink colored colored hair create an unexpected burst of soft femininity that pairs nicely with rich fall hues.

During this year’s Fashion Week runway shows in New York, Peter Som enlisted Wella stylists to infuse panels of varying rose-gold tones in each model’s hair that coordinated with his designs seamlessly.  At BUNGALOW/8, our colorists have the tools (including professional Wella color), technique (we call it advanced education), and expertise (also dubbed “experience”) to translate this hot trend from runway to real-world.

Rebecca’s Loves du Joir!!

Pastel Haircolor: Sherbet hued hair; Pastel Glory!!!

Since I’ve moved to BUNGALOW/8, I’ve had opportunity to begin creating a custom swatch book of soft pastel tones, a-la Greases’s “Beauty School Dropout”. My mind (and many bowls of hair color) have been filled with pastel dreams. A hint of pastel, be it with a few foils placed in the hair or as a translucent glow over the entire head, is a great way to beat hair color boredom without straying too far from your usual hue.

Omaha Burger Club

Tonight I will attend my very first Omaha Burger Club meeting which will be held at Tommy Colina’s Kitchen, 3558 Farnam Street. Omaha Burger’s Club as assembled at the beginning of this year by three BUNGALOW/8 clients with a feverish love for cheeseburgers. The group meets regularly to dine at a variety of Omaha’s burger venues in search of Omaha’s BEST burger. Check out the Facebook page and join in on the fun (and give us your suggestions for the best burger in town).  http://www.facebook.com/#!/groups/182479625103612/

Elvis Presley and Nancy Sinatra

From childhood to now, Nancy Sinatra has been on of my ultimate beauty and fashion icons. In advent of glorious PINTEREST (www.pinterest.com), I have become aware of the ridiculous number of stunning images featuring dear Nancy with the king of both music and my heart, Elvis Presley (largely from the movie Speedway). Their individual looks during this time both offer inspirational hair and style suggestions that are translatable and wearable today.

Flight Attendant Chic

Several years beck, I read an interview with “IT” girl Chloe Sevigny where she said the best way to flesh out your TRUE personal style was to think of things you were attracted to when you were young and apply them to your look now. While I’ve always subconsciously applied that concept to the way I dress, it was interesting to see it in print. That said, the first time I ever felt truly “stylish” in my life was at age 9 when I received a black polyester jumper for Christmas, which I wore interestingly enough, with a large-collared cornflower blue shirt. It was my very first tribute to the 60’s-70’s flight attendant look which I adore and take cues from almost daily.

Dustin Hajek loves…

Stylist and Brow Specialist Dustin Hajek returns to us from visiting Bumble University in New York City this week with exciting enthusiasm for hairdressing.  As part of our Educator-duo, Dustin is our Team Leader who translates style, product knowledge, and inspiration from The House of Bumble to our salon in Omaha.  Doing this, Dustin keeps our hairdressers excited, motivated, and creative.  While he was in New York, he was on the look-out for trends and up-coming fall ideas.  Below, Dustin has added in some of his new obsessions for life.

His first obsession is with s’mores cupcakes at Peel’s in New York.  This dainty restaurant is known for their dessert menu, but serve up excellent lunch and dinner as well.  On the corner of Bowery and East 2nd Street, this hotspot can take care of your sweet tooth easily (that is, if you have enough room left over from dinner)!  Being featured in the NYTimes, by Urbanspoon, and being Zagat rated speak highly of this East Village eatery.  Check out the story from the New York Times and swing by for a cupcake or corndogs the next time you’re in the neighborhood.  http://www.nytimes.com/2010/11/03/dining/reviews/03rest.html

Another of Dustin’s recent obsessions is the return to luxe fabrics and clothing embellishments for fall and winter.  In the up-coming collections of designers such as Elie Saab, Valentino, Ralph Lauren, and Nina Ricci, you will find fabrics with pattern, velvet, and embroidery.  Jewels, gems, and beading add to the richness of designs hitting the runway for the fall/winter 2011-2012 season.  To preview upcoming looks, or check out past runway shows, www.style.com feeds your inner fashionista and keeps you in-the-know when it comes to clothes, shoes, jewelry, or the catwalk.

When it comes to hair, Dustin is in love with any type of texture.  Beachy waves, natural curl, or a really great fashion perm really makes him happy.  One thing he is grooving on is pulling hair up and away into messy chignons, ponytails, top-knots, or simply wrapping it up with a scarf, bandanna, or handkerchief.  Nichole Richie in the picture above takes an Alexander McQueen scarf   it around her forehead to keep bangs at bay and make a fashion statement, all at the same time.  Look in your closet (or grandma’s closet for that matter) and start wrapping your hair in bold colors, patterns, or in CHEVRON!

Chevron is Dustin’s biggest crush right now.  Missoni for Target is slated to have great finds at reasonable prices beginning in September!  Get a chevron rug and put it in a room with a monochromatic chevron painted wall while wrapping yourself in a chevron blanket sipping out of a chevron embellished coffee mug.  The timeless pattern can be translated anywhere and is being found everywhere.  Keep your eye on www.target.com for Missoni’s up-coming collection and check out the Internet for everything chevron!!
