BUNGALOW/8 Makes You Look Younger, honestly!!

The euphoric beauty-rush you get when you leave the hair salon may not be all in your head.  Popular beauty website, www.youbeauty.com, recently posted findings from a study published in the journal Perspectives on Psychological Science that indicated keeping up on your beauty routine can help your insides feel just as young as your outside appearance looks.

Researchers studied 47 women who ranged in age from 27 to 83.  Independent raters surveyed photos of these women prior to an appointment at a hair salon and then again after their appointments.  In each photo, both before and after, their hair was cropped out of the photo so they would be rating their facial appearance without influence from their hair color or style.  The women who claimed to feel “younger” as a result of their salon appointment actually LOOKED younger to the raters in their after-photo.

So, the old addage “you’re only as old as you feel” may actually have substance after all.  When you feel good, you do in fact look good and this study actually proves that.  It’s no wonder we feel a little extra spring in our step each time we put on a flattering outfit or take an extra bit of time on our make-up and hair.  These beauty-boosting processes fortify us inside and out.

We at BUNGALOW/8, as students of the science of beauty and as Omaha’s Beauty Authority, strive to help you look as good as you feel each time you step into the beauty-fostering culture we have created.

Pastel Haircolor: Sherbet hued hair; Pastel Glory!!!

Since I’ve moved to BUNGALOW/8, I’ve had opportunity to begin creating a custom swatch book of soft pastel tones, a-la Greases’s “Beauty School Dropout”. My mind (and many bowls of hair color) have been filled with pastel dreams. A hint of pastel, be it with a few foils placed in the hair or as a translucent glow over the entire head, is a great way to beat hair color boredom without straying too far from your usual hue.

Omaha Burger Club

Tonight I will attend my very first Omaha Burger Club meeting which will be held at Tommy Colina’s Kitchen, 3558 Farnam Street. Omaha Burger’s Club as assembled at the beginning of this year by three BUNGALOW/8 clients with a feverish love for cheeseburgers. The group meets regularly to dine at a variety of Omaha’s burger venues in search of Omaha’s BEST burger. Check out the Facebook page and join in on the fun (and give us your suggestions for the best burger in town).  http://www.facebook.com/#!/groups/182479625103612/

Elvis Presley and Nancy Sinatra

From childhood to now, Nancy Sinatra has been on of my ultimate beauty and fashion icons. In advent of glorious PINTEREST (www.pinterest.com), I have become aware of the ridiculous number of stunning images featuring dear Nancy with the king of both music and my heart, Elvis Presley (largely from the movie Speedway). Their individual looks during this time both offer inspirational hair and style suggestions that are translatable and wearable today.

Flight Attendant Chic

Several years beck, I read an interview with “IT” girl Chloe Sevigny where she said the best way to flesh out your TRUE personal style was to think of things you were attracted to when you were young and apply them to your look now. While I’ve always subconsciously applied that concept to the way I dress, it was interesting to see it in print. That said, the first time I ever felt truly “stylish” in my life was at age 9 when I received a black polyester jumper for Christmas, which I wore interestingly enough, with a large-collared cornflower blue shirt. It was my very first tribute to the 60’s-70’s flight attendant look which I adore and take cues from almost daily.

Bombshell Blowout

Getting the perfect blowout that lasts is a combination of skill, tools, and practice!  Here, we will help outline what you need to achieve an awesome style in no time flat!

Soft Tools:  These include Foundation products from Bumble and bumble like Prep or Tonic.  Also, Structure products such as Styling Lotion with minimal hold and maximum shine, Thickening Hairspray with no hold and tons of volume, or Styling Creme with intense density help build in shine, hold, volume, or density easily and effectively.  Last, but not least, we have our Texture products to add gloss and glam such as Grooming Creme, Brilliantine, and Defrizz.  Combo these products together to find your magical mix of blowout beauty.

Hard Tools:  The brush makes or breaks a great blowout.  It is important to make sure that the brush you are using is perfect for your hair-type and for what you are trying to achieve.  For fine hair, we always recommend a ceramic brush with nylon bristles that prevent snags and pulling while speeding up drying time.  For normal/medium hair types trying to create volume, a boar bristle brush like Bumble’s Round Brush or Monroe’s Grand Gala and Etiquette are the perfect choice.  For thick coarse or curly hair, a brush with a mixture of boar bristle and nylon bristles is ideal.  Monroe’s Latina Envy is precisely what you need to smooth frizz, add volume, and create curl.  Last, but certainly not least, for the perfect smooth, straight blowout, a flat brush is what you need for normal-thick hair types.  Oliva Garden’s COMBO brush or Bumble’s award winning Flat Brush makes straight hair a snap (without a flatiron).  One round brush made just for smooth, straight styles is Monroe’s Glamour brush for colored hair clients looking for a great straight finish.  For our fine haired friends, a 7-row or vent brush is perfect for “wrap drying” into a smooth, silky finish.

Blowdryer:  As surprising as it may seem, blowdryers ARE different.  The right blowdryer can last you for years by giving you heat and wind-speed options while promising integrity through 2 year warranties.  Solono Blowdryers are professional level dryers that carry our “seal of approval” for helping you achieve the Bombshell Blowout.  Make sure you have a directional attachment for your nozzle to direct the air flow down the hair shaft to seal and smooth each hair perfectly.

(One word of wisdom, if you are having difficulty controlling both the brush and the blowdryer, check to see what hand is holding the brush.  Since you need more movement using the brush, hold it in your dominate hand.  The blowdryer typically shouldn’t move very much; keeping it pointed down the hair shaft in one direction is all you need to do.  As such, hold it in your less dominate hand since you don’t need to manipulate the blowdryer as much as the brush.)

We have added a link to some great styling videos from hair hero Luke Hersheson who is a stylist hailing from jolly old England.  Check out the “Perfect Blowdry” video to give you a step-by-step instruction to look your bombshell best!  Also, scheduling an appointment with your favorite hairdresser for a “Blowdry Bootcamp” will allow you to bring in your brushes and blowdryers so our experts can help you achieve a great style with the products you already have at home!!

The Perfect Blowdry

Day to Evening Styles : Buns and Braids

Have you ver struggled with creating a bun or (more properly known as) chignon?  Do you ever wish you could get a voluminous, thick-looking updo with fine hair?  We think we have your answer to creating a look that is appropriate for work, perfect for evening, spot-on for casual (but put-together) weekends, and just plain grocery store awesome.  Amazingly enough, this look is simply created using a tube sock (preferably clean).  When we found this awesome website that has cool clothes, a pretty funny blog, and some useful  info about the goings-on around town (if you’re in New York, that is), we were instantly hooked.  The thing that hooked us was this blog post about creating fullness out of almost nothingness.  Check out the step-by-step process of making some great buns (hun) then let us know how it all turned out!!  (Photos are appreciated at info@bungalow8omaha.com)  Opening Ceremony’s website is http://www.openingceremony.us/entry.asp?pid=4149.

Braids, braids, braids… they are everywhere this season.  Braids are an easy creation that can go from elbow grease to evening finesse just like that.  Also, after you pull out your plaits, you have awesome texture and wave.  Braid a ponytail and wrap into a slicked-back ballerina bun, fishtail for a boho-chic look, or  french braid a “waterfall” for something different while keeping your hair down.  (Waterfall tutorial on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FElGSmYPjWM)  Braids are great for something easy, a last minute day-to-evening, and to simply keep your bangs out of your eyes (think braid headband).  Google “braids” and “hair plaits” and see the myriad of possibilities for this simple, yet elegant, style.

BUNGALOW/8 Hairdressing LOVES Omaha’s kids!

This Sunday, August 28, children in the Completely Kids Program (formerly Camp Fire USA Midlands Council) will be treated to back-to-school haircuts, lunch, school supplies, and more, compliments of BUNGALOW/8 Hairdressing, Omaha’s premier boutique salon. Eric Burden, owner and master stylist of BUNGALOW/8 said his salon is hosting this event to give back to the community. “The service that Completely Kids provides to children and families in our community is so important. These are kids who deserve a special day –someone to give them an experience they’ve never had before.” “Making a positive difference in our community is at the heart of BUNGALOW/8,” Burden mentions, “and helping children is always the most fun!”

At the event, every participating Completely Kids child will receive a haircut and style, Bumble and bumble shampoo, conditioner, and styling products, as well as school supplies, and lunch.  A $20 Target gift card was also generously provided by a Board Member for each child. “I am so moved by the generosity of BUNGALOW/8 and others making this event happen. The children and families we serve enjoy very little of the every day activities many people take for granted. When you’re trying to survive day-to-day, the last thing you get to do is prepare for back-to-school like other kids,” said Completely Kids Executive Director Penny Parker. “Thanks to everyone at BUNGALOW/8, these kids will go back to school with fresh looks and added confidence ready to learn.”

The event will be held at BUNGALOW/8 Hairdressing found at 1120 South 105th Street from 11 AM to 1 PM Sunday, 8/28/2011. While the Back-to-School Haircut Day is exclusively for Completely Kids children, the salon and Completely Kids welcomes visitors who want to donate monetarily or contribute items for the Backpack Food and Supplies Program. To learn more about this program and the organization in detail, visit: www.CompletelyKids.org or come by the salon on Sunday.

Completely Kids (formerly Camp Fire USA Midlands Council) serves more than 21,000 boys and girls in grades kindergarten through high school through out-of-school programs. Dustin Hajek loves…

Stylist and Brow Specialist Dustin Hajek returns to us from visiting Bumble University in New York City this week with exciting enthusiasm for hairdressing.  As part of our Educator-duo, Dustin is our Team Leader who translates style, product knowledge, and inspiration from The House of Bumble to our salon in Omaha.  Doing this, Dustin keeps our hairdressers excited, motivated, and creative.  While he was in New York, he was on the look-out for trends and up-coming fall ideas.  Below, Dustin has added in some of his new obsessions for life.

His first obsession is with s’mores cupcakes at Peel’s in New York.  This dainty restaurant is known for their dessert menu, but serve up excellent lunch and dinner as well.  On the corner of Bowery and East 2nd Street, this hotspot can take care of your sweet tooth easily (that is, if you have enough room left over from dinner)!  Being featured in the NYTimes, by Urbanspoon, and being Zagat rated speak highly of this East Village eatery.  Check out the story from the New York Times and swing by for a cupcake or corndogs the next time you’re in the neighborhood.  http://www.nytimes.com/2010/11/03/dining/reviews/03rest.html

Another of Dustin’s recent obsessions is the return to luxe fabrics and clothing embellishments for fall and winter.  In the up-coming collections of designers such as Elie Saab, Valentino, Ralph Lauren, and Nina Ricci, you will find fabrics with pattern, velvet, and embroidery.  Jewels, gems, and beading add to the richness of designs hitting the runway for the fall/winter 2011-2012 season.  To preview upcoming looks, or check out past runway shows, www.style.com feeds your inner fashionista and keeps you in-the-know when it comes to clothes, shoes, jewelry, or the catwalk.

When it comes to hair, Dustin is in love with any type of texture.  Beachy waves, natural curl, or a really great fashion perm really makes him happy.  One thing he is grooving on is pulling hair up and away into messy chignons, ponytails, top-knots, or simply wrapping it up with a scarf, bandanna, or handkerchief.  Nichole Richie in the picture above takes an Alexander McQueen scarf   it around her forehead to keep bangs at bay and make a fashion statement, all at the same time.  Look in your closet (or grandma’s closet for that matter) and start wrapping your hair in bold colors, patterns, or in CHEVRON!

Chevron is Dustin’s biggest crush right now.  Missoni for Target is slated to have great finds at reasonable prices beginning in September!  Get a chevron rug and put it in a room with a monochromatic chevron painted wall while wrapping yourself in a chevron blanket sipping out of a chevron embellished coffee mug.  The timeless pattern can be translated anywhere and is being found everywhere.  Keep your eye on www.target.com for Missoni’s up-coming collection and check out the Internet for everything chevron!!
